Lots in Progress

Dirty

eBay #522039083 - dfledermaus - 24 @ $2.00 - Jan 6, 2001

I hadn't planned on posting this lot - I've bought a lot of coins from this vendor over the past six months and I didn't want to seem biased. But hell - some biases are deserved! These are nice coins. Mostly Rome and Constantinople commemoratives with a few radiates thrown in (I spotted a Victorinus!). Defledermaus deserves to join the top-most recommended vendors. Tell him I sent ya...

As Advertised      The Ugly Reality

Yahoo #49150606 - exoticwatches - 12 @ $2.00 - March 1, 2001

Without a doubt these are the worse coins I've ever received. This isn't a case of an overenthusiastic description - this is fraud. Check out the auction listing (link above).

Dirty

eBay #1214198722 - israel - 12 @ $1.50 - March 1, 2001

Not too bad. There is a nice little Theodora ae4 here and a couple of the other coins might be keepers.

Dirty

eBay #1213881768 -  pamik@trxinc.com - 10 @ $2.00 - March 1, 2001

An interesting mix of coins. A very nice trachy, a couple of Greek. I'm looking forward to cleaning these up.

Dirty

eBay #1215325701 - silenoscoins - 12 @ $1.50 - March 11, 2001

A very mixed lot; several Byzantine (including a nice trachy), a Greek or two and a couple of the most incrusted coins I've seen. There isn't enough olive oil in Italy to cut through that!

Dirty

eBay #1218692390 - cbnoble - 11 @ $2.50 - March 21, 2001

This and the lot below are from a new eBay vendor. He has two qualities of coins - these are the nicer. A couple of nice campgates and antoninianii are included. Very nice coins.

Dirty

eBay #1218963939 - cbnoble - 16 @ $1.00 - March 21, 2001

These are the cheaper coins and, as expected, these are smaller and more encrusted. We'll have to wait to see what is inside.

Dirty

eBay #1413572511 - ancientcoinman - 17 @ $1.00 - March 21, 2001

Another lot from eBay's biggest seller of uncleaned coins. They seem very nice for the money.

I keep ordering lots even though my backlog is growing. Below are two lots of inexpensive coins. Both are nice.

Dirty

eBay #1219553172 - bcrumpt1 - 25 @ $0.80 - March 23, 2001

Dirty

Yahoo #49560257 - Stankov1 - 20 @ $0.80 - March 23, 2001

Dirty

eBay #1219263853 - lucajack@aol.com - 18 @ $0.95 - March 24, 2001

The vendor says these are from Tunisa. They certainly seem different - some of the smallest coins I've received. Some don't have much detail but some may come out very nice.

Dirty

eBay #1218966124 - mc2000uk - 8 @ $3.56 - March 26, 2001

These were fairly expensive, as coins from the UK tend to be. Most seem to be high quality examples of common coins. Nearly all should become 'keepers'.

Dirty

eBay #1219336674 - caesars12 - 10 @ $1.85 - March 28, 2001

Another decent lot from Joe. All seem to be late Late Roman Empire; Valentinian, Gratian, etc...

Dirty

eBay #1220961935 - dfledermaus - 10 @ $4.00 - March 28, 2001

This was a special lot of only 65 coins offered on eBay. Very different from the usual. About half Byzantine, two large provincials and a large hunk of unidentifiable silver. Should be fun.

Dirty

eBay #1219198434 - josephd@efni.com - 10 @ $2.00 - April 5, 2001

A few nice coins here. Several should be keepers.

Dirty

eBay #1224768704 - ancient_empires - 15 @ $1.10 - April 8, 2001

A wide variety of coins, but of pretty poor grade. A neat mix of Roman provincial, Roman imperial and Greek.

Dirty

eBay #1222408202 - taurus454 - 10 @ $2.00 - April 12, 2001

This vendor has been selling on Yahoo as tmalo75285@aol.com and has started on eBay. I decided to give him another try (one lot from him is above). These don't appear to be great coins - one even broke in transit! A couple show promise; one is either Arcadius or Honorius with two emperors on the reverse.

Dirty

coincartel - 20 @ $1.75 - April 14, 2001

A passing joke on the Dirty Roman Bath Society board about forming a cartel has yielded one! Not really a cartel, but an experienced coin-scrubber has teamed with a European dealer to offer decent coins at decent prices. And it looks like they are achieving their aim - these are nice. This month (April, 2001) they are offering 20% more coins and a Byzantine cup coin for free.

Below are my first two stealth purchases; lots bought by someone else (thanks to Skip Key) and sent to me unopened. I chose these two vendors not because I distrust them but because I believed that they were on the up-and-up. And they are. Look at these nice coins...

Dirty

eBay #1223291830 - bcrumpt1 - 14 @ $2.00 - April 18, 2001

As I said above, nice coins. There is a Justin I pentanummus here and what look to be a couple of Constantinian-era ae4's that should turn out about VF-EF.

Dirty

eBay #1222370639 - caesars12 - 10 @ $2.85 - April 18, 2001

Joe's advertisments of silver aren't just baseless claims - they are real. This lot of ten coins contained two silver; a republican denarius and what looks to be either a fouree or very dirty Imperial denarius (Caracalla?). While silver alone doesn't make a lot more valuable (worn silver is as worthless as worn bronze) the Republican denarius is attributable as a Julia 5b. Cool...

Dirty

eBay #1226946203 - ailcol - 10 @ $1.85 - April 20, 2001

Coins from the Netherlands! Well, the vendor is in the Netherlands - I doubt if too many Roman coins are unearthed under the dikes. Anyway, these are pretty nice, with provincial, antoninianii represented along with the usual ae3/4's.

Dirty

eBay #1229325530 - petroni912@aol.com - 12 @ $2.00 - April 21, 2001

Very nice coins! The large green coin is an Antonious Pius provincial. The rest are great too.

Dirty

eBay #1231628272 - phantoms1@webtv.net - 18 @ $1.00 - May 7, 2001

Not great coins but not horrible either.  OK for the price and several show promise.

Dirty

eBay 1231494254 - marsforum - 20 @ $1.00 - May 8, 2001

Several nice coins here.  Two are Greek and very likely attributable.  One looks to be a nice VF FEL TEMP.  Some of the others are chipped , but hey, these are dollar coins.

  Dirty

Yahoo #47091363 - dvb76 - 11 @ $1.60 - May 9, 2001

Some of these can be attributed, others are super encrusted.  I assume that there is a coin inside that big round chunk of concrete but it will take electrolysis to find out.  A nice mix - Late Roman, Provincial and the big thing might be Byzantine.

  Dirty

eBay #1230879785 - magic1112 - 25 @ $1.00 - May 15, 2001

Another ninja strike!  This time by Mark Doucette (thanks Mark).  Doesn't look like there is much here.

Dirty

coincartel - 15 @ $1.75 - May 19, 2001

Ninja Dan Kimball ran this test on the Coincartel.  Hmmm...  These are better than the coins I ordered myself.  Perhaps the vendors don't fear me as much as they ought. :)  Nice coins, should turn out well.

Dirty

eBay 1235761789 - www.ancientcoins.ca - 15 @ $1.25 - May 23, 2001

A new vendor to me, and a good one too.  Nice, whole, dirty coins.

Below, something a little different: three lots of coins not from on-line auctions.

Dirty

Uncleaned Ancient Coins dealer of the week  (pamik@trxinc.com) -  15 @ $1.50 - June 12, 2001

There are now two e-groups on yahoo dealing with uncleaned coins.  The newest is Uncleaned Ancient Coins.  They try to offer specials from on-line dealers.  These are from the same dealer as lot  #1213881768 above.  Pamela has very nice coins and she offered a lot of unusually large coins to the group for $2.25 each.  I opted for another of her offers, large encrusted coins for $1.50.  Large coins are often nearly featureless - these are better than most.

Dirty

Bob Bischoff (petroni912@aol.com) - 20 @ $1.85 - June 13, 2001

Petroni sent out an email to previous customers offering these coins.  His normal coins are excellent and these are even better!  If you want to be put on his email list let him know.

Dirty

CoinCom (Joe Blaszik) -  50 @ $0.75 - June 15, 2001

Joe offered these to the members of the Yahoo e-group CoinCom.  Lovely coins for the money.  There are two early Byzantine decanummi here.

Dirty

eBay #1244122959 - aeratus - 10 @ $2.00 - June 21, 2001

These are very nice coins.  Two Provincial, two Byzantine and the rest seem to be other than the usual Imperial.  I think I see a Helena peeking out at me.

Also, In the CoinCom e-group there has been a lot of discussion over using distilled water rather than olive oil.  I am going to try this method with this lot.  I'll let you know how daily scrubs and changes of distilled water work out.  There aren't any really encrusted coins in this lot so it shouldn't be much of a challenge.

Dirty

eBay #1246369482 - Caesars12 - 20 @ $2.25 - June 25, 2001

Another lot from Joe, another decent lot.  I'll be cleaning these with distilled water too.  The distilled water method is working out very well.

Dirty

eBay #1246959498 - ancient_empires - 10 @ $2.25 - June 28, 2001

These aren't really uncleaned coins but I thought you'd be interested to see them.  Advertised as large interesting coins, that is exactly what they are.  Not great quality, but nearly all are attributable.  Many Roman Provincial, a couple of Byzantine and the rest Imperial, these are a refreshing change from Constantine ae3's and it should be fun to try to figure out.

Dirty

eBay #1245895240 - stig6 - 21 @ $2.12 - June 30, 2001

Usually when I try to get coins from England I'm disappointed.  Not this time.  Some nice coins here including barbarous radiates.

Dirty

eBay #1249058219 - thebeast@beastcoins.com - 20 @ $1.50 - July 6, 2001

Coins from a member of the Uncleaned Coin e-group.  There are a couple interesting coins here.

Dirty

eBay #1248279208 - imabrit@pipeline.com - 12 @ $1.70 - July 9, 2001

Some really nice coins from a vendor who always tries to give value for money.  Man, has he succeeded this time.  I don't know how the larger coins will come out but the smaller are enough to make me happy on their own.

Dirty

eBay #1248870586 - bcrumpt1 - 20 @ $0.90 - July 9, 2001

As much as I like Ben and his coins, the last few lots I've gotten from him haven't been overwhelming.  Less than half of these show promise.  Of course, these are Ben's cheaper coins - the $2.00 may be better.

Dirty

eBay #1249660347 - henrymouses - 10 @ $1.50 - July 9, 2001

It looks like there are some VERY interesting coins here.  A helmeted Constantine and what looks to be a Magentius lead the way.

Dirty

Petroni912@aol.com - 20 @ $1.85 - July 10, 2001

I wasn't going to post this lot.  I didn't want to seem to too enamored of any vendor.  As your independent reviewer I have to stay, like Caesar's wife, beyond suspicion.  But HOT DAMN!!!

These came from Bob Bischoff thru an offer to his mailing list members.  And you can join the list via the link above, free and without obligation.  Bob offers these on eBay as well, but if you want first crack at a discount price, let Bob know.

Dirty

eBay #1248458081 - caesar*29 - 20 @ $0.80 - July 12, 2001

Although a few of these coins show signs of previous cleaning (thanks go to Susan Headley for making the scrubbing community aware of this possibility) these are very nice coins for the low price.  I've been shying away from cheaper coins over the last six months, since it takes as much effort to clean a cull as a great coin.  But these look both cheap and pretty good.

Dirty

eBay #1248298349 - tonyscoins - 50 @ $0.81 - July 13, 2001

This vendor doesn't have a high enough rating yet to run dutch auctions on eBay so he is selling his coins in large lots.  I didn't want to invest a lot of money in a single lot from a new vendor so Mark Doucette came to my rescue and we split a lot between us.  I'm glad we did.  There are some nice large coins here including the nice Hadrian in the upper right of the scan.  This will be a lot worth cleaning and I hope to buy from Tony again.

Dirty

eBay #1247344948 - www.ancientcoins.ca - 25 @ $0.75 - July 13, 2001

Another inexpensive lot.  These coins were advertised as coming from Britain.  I believe they do; there are coins of Tetricus in here.  Should be fun.

Dirty

eBay #1254081551 - caesars12 - 10 @ $3.00 - July 20, 2001

High end coins from Joe.  I'm sure it is just the luck of the draw, but these aren't too nice for $3.00 apiece.  Hey - everyone is entitled to strike out once in a while...

Dirty

eBay #1247488032 - aaccoins - 15 @ $1.80 - July 20, 2001

A very interesting lot from Cyprus.  Greek, Roman, Byzantine and even what looks to be a medieval somethingorother.  Very cool!

Dirty

eBay #1251713956 - www.ancientcoins.ca - 20 @ $2.25 - July 27, 2001

A wonderful lot of coins from a dealer who is becoming one of my favorites.  Many antoninianii, all large and whole.

Dirty

eBay #1252980656 - doubleo2 - 20 @ $0.85 - July 28, 2001

Super coins, doubly so considering the price.  The is a Fausta ae3 here.  If it comes out nice it will pay for the whole lot by itself.

Dirty

eBay #1254241359 - hawkerss - 20 @ $0.99 Aug 1, 2001

Not great coins, but they were cheap and I got twice as many as I paid for.  There might be some nice surprises here.

Dirty

eBay #1254241998 - mc2000uk - 20 @ $2.84 - Aug 7, 2001

These were expensive but look at them!  There is a EF Divo Claudio, a VF Probus ant, a worn as which I think is of Augustus.  And that's after only a soap and water scrub.

BTW, these were so nice that I was concerned that I was getting unrepresentative coins (i.e., 'salted' coins).  So I contacted five other winners of the same auction and all gave good reviews.  Hey - I've got a reputation to protect!  ;)  Anyway, I believe this guy (and his coins) are for real.

Dirty

eBay #1257838123 - caesars12 - 15 @ $2.00 - Aug 10, 2001

Yet another lot from Joe, and a much nicer set of coins.  Several Byzantine, a nice Trajan limes denarius and several other coins which already show nice detail.

Dirty

Yahoo (Germany) #1004060194 - markgrafcardisto - 50 @ $0.80 - Aug 12, 2001

A nice set of coins from Austria.  More than the average number of nice antoninianii here and a very decent silver denarii.  I suggest checking out the foreign auction sites.

Dirty

eBay #1261156313 - geauc478 - 15 @ $2.00 - Aug 17, 2001

I'm not sure what I have here.  There seems to be a Antoninius Pius as and some other coins with some detail showing.  Check back later for the results.  Yeah, later.  Like next year.  It is a lot quicker and more fun to buy these coins than to clean them.  Mumble, grumble, mutter, mutter....

Dirty

eBay #1257649324 - www.ancientcoins.ca - 15 @ $1.40 - Aug 24, 2001

Another lot from this vendor, another good lot.  This vendor has yet to disappoint me.  Recommended.

Dirty

eBay #1264240265 - meterman2 - 20 @ $1.00 - Aug 24, 2001

Not sure about these.  Several show promise.

Dirty

eBay #1265372779 - caesars12 - 15 @ $2.50 - Aug 27, 2001

Another nice lot from Joe B.  The ae3s that we usually find in our lots are very poor here.  And who cares!  There is a nice Byzantine follis, three silver / silvered coins and, best of all to me, a big worn-out early Imperial with no less than three counterstamps!  Very cool.

Dirty

eBay #1264932145 - magic1112 - 20 @ $1.00 - Aug 27, 2001

A nice lot of inexpensive coins from this Dutch vendor.  Lots of antoninianii and a very nice fouree Julia Soaemias denarius.

Dirty

eBay #1268598440 - pamik1 - 12 @ $1.65 - Sept 4, 2001

Several large provincials and an early Imperial as make this lot look like a winner already.

Dirty

eBay #1266263123 - desimone_1 - 10 @ $2.00 - Sept 11, 2001

A mixed bag of high-quality small and low-quality large bronzes.  Might prove interesting.

Dirty

eBay #1266679690 - mc2000uk - 25 @ $2.20 - Sept 11, 2001

First of all I need to say that the gorgeous Aurelian ant at the top isn't meant to be uncleaned but similar coins were included in all orders of 25 or more coins.  Not a bad bonus, specially considering that the rest of the coins are very nice as well.  There is a fine Probus, several Provincial, and a nice Tetricus.  Great value.

Dirty

eBay #1268238066 - geauc478 - 20 @ $1.55 - Sept 11, 2001

These are more uncleaned than the uncleaned coins above, so it is hard to tell what is here.  All are ae 3/4, some seem to have nice details.

Dirty

eBay #1269168829 - caesar*29 - 20 @ $0.80 - Sept 20, 2001

Decent coins considering the price.

Dirty

eBay #1273523701 - aaccoins - 30 @ 2.00 Sept 29, 2001

Very unusual coins.  These come from Cyprus, hence the wide assortment of Ptolmeaic, Crusafer and Byzantine coins in this lot.

Dirty

eBay #1274588233 - lodge-antiquities - 50 @ $0.60 - Oct 1, 2001

Lodge is a UK dealer I've bought individual coin s from before, but this is the first time I've seen them selling uncleaned coins.  These are great for the price.  That is a Valens ae2 at the top, there is a Hadrian as in there and god knows what the rest is.  Teeny fractions, etc...  Very cool.

Dirty

Petroni (Bob Bischoff) -  20 @ $1.75 - Oct 3, 2001

Another lot purchased directly from Bob Bischoff through the Yahoo Uncleaned Coins User Group.  If you needed another reason to join, you have it now.  Great Coins.  Nice coins, several antoninianii.

Dirty

eBay #1276579216 - aeratus - 15 @ $2.00 - Oct 8, 2001

A nice lot from Aeratus, one of the major contributors to the prizes for the Uncleaned Coin Competition. An unusual percentage of large, pre-Constantine coins.

Dirty

eBay #1276158498 - markgrafcardisto - 20 @ $1.40 - Oct 12, 2001

This lot came with a very nice Maximinus denarius.  This might just be a salted coin, but another member of the Uncleaned Coin got a Justinian gold tremiss!  Even disregarding the denarius, the coins are great. Many early Roman coins and the late Roman look to be in fine condition beneath the dirt.  A vendor to watch for.

Dirty

eBay #1278236728 - tonyscoins - 20 @ $0.99 - Oct 13, 2001

Another great lot from this new vendor on eBay.  Great coins for a buck apiece.

Dirty

eBay #1275730236 - magic1112 - 50 @ $1.00 - Oct 13, 2001

OK - I got another salted denarius.  Forget it.  Look at the rest of these wonderful coins.  Most should turn out with lots of detail.  This Dutch vendor has never disapointed.

Dirty

eBay #1279861925 - thebeast@beastcoins.com - 15 @ $1.50 - Oct 20, 2001

Another lot from the Beast.  It must have broken his heart to send these, there is a nice campgate here.  Don't worry Zach, I'll sell it to you after I clean it up...

Dirty

eBay #1282147031 - numisart - 20 @ $0.91 - Oct 29, 2001

There are a lot of European vendors selling on eBay now. And we are the richer for it - these are nice coins for the price.

Dirty

eBay #1473378433 - ancientcoinman - 10 @ $1.95 - Oct 29, 2001

Ancientcoin takes a lot of deserved flak for his claims of gold coins found in his lots.  No gold here, but the coins are pretty good anyway.  I'm looking forward to finding out who in on the ae3 with the tiny portrait.

Dirty

Blazick's Byzantine - Joe Blazick - 20 @ $3.75 - Nov 1, 2001

Joe offered these Byzantine from Israel - first to the Uncleaned Coins list, then on eBay.  Those of you who have been following the progress of this site might have noticed that I am getting more and more interested in Byzantine coinage.  These are wonderful.

Dirty

Petroni - Bob Bischoff - 21 @ $1.85 - Nov 5, 2001

Another of what seems to be monthly lots from Bob.  Hey - like getting nice coins too, and Bob somehow always has sweet coins.  These came from an email Bob sent out to his previous customers offering them cheaper than he offers them on eBay.  Get on Bob's mailing list by clicking here.

Dirty

eBay #1283878760 - bcrumpt1 - 10 @ $2.00 - Nov 5, 2001

The last few lots I've bought from Ben haven't been as nice I've come to expect, but these look to be back up to Ben's previous high standards.  There are two campgates here and several antoninianii.  Very cool.

Dirty

eBay #1287724683 - meterman2 - 15 @ $1.35 - Nov 5, 2001

These were listed as crusty, and trust me, they are.  The rational behind buying encrusted coins (one I agree with) is that they are the only coins we receive that are truly free from cherry-picking.  Whether there is anything inside is another matter.  I intend on zapping all of these with my electrolysis gizmo, so I should have results posted soon.

Dirty

eBay #1289253205 - lodge-antiquities - 50 @ $0.57 - Nov 10, 2001

Another lot of Lodge's low end detector finds.  Mostly barbaric minims, a couple of which look cool.

Dirty

eBay #1289453466 - geauc478 - 10 @ $3.90 - Nov 11, 2001

Another attempt to get large coins.  And as usual, they don't have many details left.  Discouraging.

Dirty

eBay #1290315687 - vette1986 - 12 @ $1.99 - Nov 14, 2001

These aren't as bad as the scan looks.  They're worse.  :)  But I've seen worse coins.  They are right.....

Dirty

eBay #1293361606 - rushsale - 20 @ $1.15 - Nov 15, 2001

....here.

Dirty

eBay #1295848203 - lodge-antiquities - 15 @ $2.51 - Nov 29, 2001

I've bought several lots of Lodge's low-end detector finds.  These are their more expensive offerings.  Common coins in nice condition.  Most are already attributable.

Dirty

eBay #1297458220 - nemesiscoins - 15 @ $2.00 - Dec 2, 2001

Nemesis has been selling coins on eBay ever since I've been buying.  These are a nice mix of coin.  Some already attributable, some heavily encrusted.  One nice thing this vendor supplies with each order is a bag of culls to practice on.  These are clipped, broken and holed coins which some of the other vendors either don't remove or sell separately.  A recommended vendor.

Dirty

Melqart (of the Yahoo Uncleaned Coins egroup) -  30 @ $3.00 - Dec 8, 2001

Every once in a while Melqart offers Spanish uncleaned coins to the group.  His lots offer a different mix of coins and mints.  These won't need much cleaning - a few weeks in olive oil and a few scrubbings.  There are two ae2's in here, Gratian and Theodosius.  Also a Constantine SARMATIA DEVICTA.  Neat stuff.  Join the list!

Dirty

eBay #1295034187 - tonyscoins - 10 @ $4.50 - Dec 10, 2001

Every once in a while I get hopelessly optimistic and try buying large uncleaned coins.  It never really works out too good.  This lot and the lot below are examples.  This lot from Tony is better than most large uncleaned - several have enough detail that they might be attributable.

Dirty

eBay #1307410635 - maximuscoins - 6 @ $4.30 - Dec 17, 2001

These aren't as nice as the large coins above.  Several show scrapes where they were hashly checked in the field.   The coin at top-left might be nice.  Claudius?

Dirty

eBay #1307415080 - maximuscoins - 20 @ $1.20 - Dec 17, 2001

Coins from a new eBay vendor.  A nice mix of Late Roman with a few Provincials.  Looks good for the money.

Sorry about the almost month-long delay in updating the site.  I have two reasons - one good, one bad.  The good reason is I've been very busy with work (I have to be able to buy these silly coins, after all).  The bad reason is that Civilization III was released.  What spare time I've had has been spent trying to work my civilization up from the Stone Age to the Space Age.  Right now I am leading the Romans against the Germans. If that sounds familiar, well, it is the year 1650 and my riflemen are mowing down his cavalry.  Cool game - check it out here.

Dirty

philipew1@yahoo.co.uk - 40 @ $2.50 - Jan 15, 2002

These are from a gent in the Yahoo Uncleanedcoins email group.  He posted an offer and I took him up on it.  Forty antoninianii for $100.  Not great coins, but whaddaya expect for $2.50 a coin?

Dirty

Yahoo #58879917 - oldcoinman -  20 @ $1.55 - Jan 17, 2002

This vendor has been selling individual cleaned coins on Yahoo for a while and now offers uncleaned coins.  These look very nice with an assortment of sizes and types.

Dirty

eBay #1318285448 - hail-cesare - 30 @ $1.00 - Jan 24, 2002

These don't look to be of terribly high quality, but may be fairly priced at $1 a coin.  Is it just me, or are prices coming down?

Yahoo #59750887 - Wolfram2112 - 23 @ $1.00 - Jan 24, 2002

Again, inexpensive coins, and again, they aren't too inspiring.  There is a wonderful campgate here, but was already cleaned.  The rest seem average at best.

I've purchased several lots from Henry under another ID.  His coins were good then, and they look very good now.

More coins from Joe B.  These are from a mixed lot of Roman Imperial, Byzantine and Egyptian coins Joe threw together.  I think I got a heavy dose of the Byzantine since Joe knows I like these.  This isn't unusual or special.  Most dealers will try to accommodate reasonable requests.  Reasonable requests don't include "All gold coins please".  If that does work for anyone, let me know please. :)

eBay #1323856396 - ottermoss - 17 @ $1.00 - Feb 2, 2002

A new vendor as far as I can tell.  And as far as I can tell, these look to be good coins for just a buck apiece.

eBay #1321620899 - benscoins - 12 @ $2.00 - Feb 5, 2002

Sort of a sad story behind these.  The always reliable Ben Crumpton is now dealing under a new eBay ID, "benscoins".  Seems that there has been a breakup in his family life and his wife Kelli got custody of the "bcrumpt1" eBay ID.  Ben's family status may have changed but his coins remain as great as ever.  These won't be much of a challenge to clean, but since I have many dozens of lots to scrub, I don't mind that at all.

eBay #1321416262 - bcrumpt1 - 15 @ $2.00 - Feb 5, 2002

And these are from Ben's "ex" Kelli.  From these coins it is apparent the Kelli plans on keeping the same high standards as this ID maintained before.  These are wonderful - ants, follii and two nice fouree denarii.  So how does one decide who to buy from?  Why decide?  Buy from both!

eBay #1327797432 - meterman2 - 14 @ $1.30 - Feb 6, 2002

The two lots above are a tough act to follow, but Fred (meterman2) has some nice coins here.  And he has the honesty to advertise that gold isn't found in uncleaned lots.  Unlike certain other vendors I could name.  Trust me folks, if gold is ever found in any of these lots it is because it was put there by the seller to generate sales.  Gold comes out of the ground as pristine as the day it went in.  In a mass of dirty coins it would stand out like a dead nun in snowbank.  Anyway, these are good coins offered by a good vendor.

Hannes Mayer of the Uncleaned Coins eGroup - 40 @ $0.70 - Feb 20, 2002

Very cool coins, bought for a very cool reason.  These won't be posted cleaned on my site because I won't be cleaning them.  Instead, they are going to a class of students as part of the Ancient Coins for Education project.  A.C.E. is a spin-off of the Uncleaned Coins eGroup.  A.C.E. supplies coins to teachers with the moxie to add classical studies to their curriculum. We try to offer coins, support, supplies and an in-person speaker when desired and possible.  Anyway, Hannes is now selling uncleaned coins and I took the opportunity to buy some which I will send uncleaned to a classroom of (hopefully) eager students.  This is a great program - if you are in a position and mindset to help please click the link above.

And the coins.  Look at the coins!  Hannes included 10 extra coins since these were for the cause (thanks Hannes!) but even without these are great coins for the money.  The kids will love these.  So will I  - I'm ordering more for me.

Hannes Mayer of the Uncleaned Coins eGroup - 40 @ $1.00 - Feb 27, 2002

I liked the coins above so much I had to buy more.  These are Hannes' better grade, and still only a buck per.  They look nice - all evenly covered with dirt, yet with a hint of details showing.  I'm impressed.

eBay #1336543240 - roman_coins - 50 @ 0.95 - Mar 15, 2002

A new (to me at least) vendor on eBay.  Very decent coins for a dollar per.  All are small coins, but in the envelope the vendor admitted so, said that these were all his supplier had sent, apologized and included 10% more.  Obviously an honest guy and someone who plans to be in business for a while.  Worth a try.

eBay #1335232654 - mc2000uk - 15 @ $2.14 - Mar 16, 2002

Mark Cardwell's coins usually offer an interesting mix.  In here is a post-reform radiate, what looks to be a Severian provincial and a nice Gallienus antoninianus.  Good stuff.

Helmut Schnider  - 100 @ $0.91 - March 20, 2002

Not nearly as nice as coins I've gotten before from Helmut.  There look to be some keepers here but out of a hundred coins, I'd expect a few.

Henry has been selling coins for a while.  He breaks his lots up into three different grades and prices them accordingly.  Some people like it - some don't.  I do.  These are his better coins and they look very nice.

eBay #1087098628 - fast_ship! - 20 @ $1.25 - Apr 12, 2002

Another new vendor, but look at the difference!  Wonderful coins!  I contacted other buyers and they confirmed that theirs were at least as good.

Bob Bischoff (Apr 15, 2002) - 50 @ $1.85 - Apr 15, 2002

If you aren't on Bob's email alert list you are missing out.  These, as always, are great coins.  There is a gVF Tacitus in here, two Augustus provincials and a whole slew of other nice coins.  Perpetually recommended.

In the Bag     Out of the Bag     After 1st Wash

eBay #1352200763 - 6890gold - 200 @ $2.10 - May 20, 2002

This was an offer I couldn't refuse.  This new vendor has a family source back in the Balkans.  The auction was for 2,000 coins and started at $2.00.  What made it irresistible was to offer to winners of 200 coins to receive them in the bag they arrived in.  Figuring that this is as close to the source as I am likely to ever get, I bid on 200 coins and got my 200 at $2.10 per.  So, above you'll find scans of the bag, the coins dumped straight from the bag onto the scanner (which scratched the heck out of the glass - the sacrifices I make for you...) and the coins after an initial soapy wash and scrub.  They look pretty good with a nice mix of worn early republic, a couple of Tetriarchal follii, decent Balkan provincials and ae3s of the usual Constantine and Valentinian crowd.  I'm not unhappy at all with the coins, although I don't know if I'll be plopping down $420 dollars for a single lot of uncleaned coins in the future.

eBay #1361535481 - caesars12 - 50 @ $1.75 - June 21, 2002

As you can no doubt tell, I'm slowing down on buying uncleaned coins (which I intended) and cleaning uncleaned coins (which I didn't and don't intend).  I just have too many of the damn things.  But sometimes I can't help myself, and when Joe said he had a lot better than he had seen in over a year, I jumped.  And I'm glad I did - very nice coins indeed.

I haven't updated this part of the site for six months.  To be honest, I just got kind of burned out and disinterested.  Not so much on buying and cleaning these thing but in the self-imposed obligation of maintaining the web-site.  But I continued buying like the addict I am and some of the lots are below.  I've pretty much stopped buying from every new face on eBay, there are too damn many of them.  I know which vendors I like and trust (a study of these pages should demonstrate who they are) and so most of my money will head towards them.  Please, if anyone has unusually good or bad experiences with vendors, new or not-so-new, please let me know and I'll post these reviews.  Anyway, a few new lots are below.

Now here we have some serious goodies.  This is the vendor I bought the huge untouched batch from back in May.  Those were well, so-so.  These kick ass.  It isn't the silver which wins me over (anyone can throw low grade denarii onto the mix) but the rest of the lot seem to contain some coins with real promise.  I really believe that this vendor is the direct importer he claims to be, is honest and tries to supply coins as direct from the fields as we are likely to see.  Recommended.

Private buy from Bob Bischoff - 25 @ $1.85 - Oct 10, 2002

As usual, Bob hits another one out of the park.  Bob always says not to ignore the ae4's and this lot is a case in point.  One of the little coins had a monogram on it.  I cleaned it up and researched it and found that it was a nummus from Marcian and probably worth most of what I paid for the lot.

eBay #1396535149 - caesars12 - 10 @ $2.25 - Nov 17, 2002

Large coins which are better than most large coins we get in these lots.  Joe ended the auction after all coins had been bid on so that the price wouldn't go up.  What a guy!

eBay #1394055338 - hail-cesare - 15 @ $3.50 - Nov 3, 2002

These were sold as "Quality Large Coins" and I couldn't describe them better myself.  Don't expect too much when ordering large uncleaned coins from anyone.  Most aren't worth the effort.  These are much better than most.
