Cleaned Lots
(Lots cleaned in 2000 have been archived here)
eBay #334797359 - krenovsky@aol.com - 10 @ $1.50 - June 1, 2000Finished - January 17, 2001 Keeper % = 50% ($3.00per) Lot value $10 ($0.66/ $)
Nothing very special here.
eBay #1208031593 - doubleo2 - 8 @ $2.50 - Jan 25, 2001
Started and Finished - January 25, 2001 Keeper % = 100% ($2.50 per) Lot value $31.75 ($1.59 / $)
This is the first lot of coins which went right to the 'Cleaned Lots' page. These were advertised as premium coins and they certainly are. I hope everyone who bid received coins this nice.
Feb 11, 2001; I just received another batch from this lot and vendor. The new coins are every bit as good as the last. I've also contacted two other bidders who have verified that these coins are representative. DoubleO goes on the recommended vendors list.
eBay #315576954 - ancientcoins1 - 20 @ $0.80 - June 1, 2000
Finished - February 11, 2001 Keeper % = 35% ($2.28per) Lot value $20 ($1.25/ $)
Great coins for such a low price. The most interesting coin to me is the copper-clad barbaric coin. Why would anyone cover a coin in copper, and what is inside?
eBay #1209575991 - bcrumpt -6 @ $3.50 - February 15, 2001
Started and Finished - February 15, 2001 Keeper % = 66% ($5.25per) Lot value $45 ($2.14/ $)
And now for something completely different. The always reliable Ben Crumpton offered a small lot of uncleaned Byzantine coins. I'm much more unfamiliar with these so I may have the valuation inflated, but regardless, these are interesting coins.
Yahoo #26048690 - magicdeals - 18 @ $0.99 - June 2, 2000
Finished - February 25, 2001 Keeper % = 0% Lot value $0
Nothing. Nada. Zip. Diddlysquat. Bubkis.
eBay #336506823 - shannon67 - 10 @ $1.80 - June 3, 2000
Finished - February 25, 2001 Keeper % = 40% ($4.50 per) Lot value $21.50 ($1.16/ $)
Very nice. The helmeted Julian is especially nice.
eBay #334134998 - seudolus - 15 @ $2.00 - June 5, 2000
Finished - February 25, 2001 Keeper % = 33% ($6 per) Lot value $42 ($1.40/ $)
As you can tell from the first scan, these were totally encrusted when I got them. Six months in olive oil didn't budge the cement. But in the electrolysis bath they turned out wonderfully. Look at the detail on the Jovian!
Yahoo #27184226 - ancientcoinman - 12 @ $1.75 - June 5, 2000
Finished - March 11, 2001 Keeper % = 33% ($5.25 per) Lot value $46.50 ($2.21/ $)
While the Constantius Gallus has a nice portrait the prize of the lot is a nice Procopius. One of the most valuable coins I've pulled out of these lots.
eBay #339746651 - b-17 - 20 @ $1.00 - June 7, 2000
Finished - March 11, 2001 Keeper % = 30% ($3.33 per) Lot value $39 ($1.95/ $)
Another very nice Constantius Gallus. The Tacitus has a wonderful portrait and the Licinius II isn't bad either. I was lucky enough to recognise the Sestertius as one of Livia. Not much left of it though...
eBay #314043132 - jempire - 10 @ $1.50 - June 8, 2000
Finished - March 17, 2001 Keeper % = 50% ($ 3 per) Lot value $ 23 ($1.53/ $)
Half of the coins in this lot came out keepers and a couple are real standouts. Check out the Julian II military bust.
Yahoo #27425770 - bcrumpt1 - 15 @ $2.00 - June 12, 2000
Finished - March 22, 2001 Keeper % = 73% ($2.72 per) Lot value $33 ($1.10/ $)
Nothing too special here - just solidly nice attributable coins. Seventythree percent of the coins came out keepers. I think that is the record. My favorite coin of the lot is the Constantius II as Caesar campgate.
eBay #350976204 - a9gb7 - 16 @ $1.62 - June 12, 2000
Finished - March 30, 2001 Keeper % = 19% ($8.64 per) Lot value $8 ($0.30/ $)
Not much here. The Aurelian would have been nicer but one side was corroded.
Coincom's melqart - 10 @ $3.50 - March 26, 2001
Finished - April 1, 2001 Keeper % = 90% ($3.88 per) Lot value $48.50 ($1.39/ $)
These were offered by Melqart in the Coincom internet discussion group. He hopes to have more to sell soon, but with a catch; you have to be a member of Coincom! To join, click the logo above. It is free and educational. And these are wonderful coins.
eBay #337816613 - meterman2 - 20 @ $1.50 - June 13, 2000
Finished - April 9, 2001 Keeper % = 40% ($3.75 per) Lot value $26.50 ($0.88/ $)
Three coins are real standouts here. The two Constantius II ae4's with the two Victory reverses came out very nice. The artwork on the best one is some of the best I've seen. You can tell which leg (left of right) is placed ahead of the other through the skirts. Nice legs too...
eBay #351486227 - nemesiscoins - 20 @ $1.69 - June 14, 2000
Finished - April 12, 2001 Keeper % = 55% ($3.07 per) Lot value $33.50 ($0.99/ $)
A very nice lot, over half came out keepers. Of note is the Julian II SPES REIPVBLICE . This is the first of these I've found in an uncleaned lot. Also unusual is the Valentinian RESTITVTOR REIP. All in all a very pleasant lot to clean. BTW, can anyone id the right-most coin? Islamic?
eBay #347288407 - raydar - $12 @ 1.50 - June 16, 2000
Finished - April 20, 2001 Keeper % = 50% ($3.60 per) Lot value $30 ($1.67/ $)
Only one really nice coin here, but it is really nice. Coins of Constantine II as Augustus aren't common and finding a VF example here paid for the whole lot.
eBay #344665133 - irish571 - 10 @ $2.00 - June 17, 2000
Finished -April 22,, 2001 Keeper % = 60% ($3.33 per) Lot value $ 26.50 ($1.33/ $)
What a nice mixture of coins. Byzantine, Tetriarchy, post-Tetriarchy. Wish this vendor was still active but there is no sign of this guy.
Amazon #0515B182819 - stankov - 20 @ $0.80 - June 19, 2000
Clean
Finished - May 5, 2001 Keeper % = 75% ($1.07 per) Lot value $46 ($2.87/ $)
OK, I'm going to try something different here. I have a copy of Durst's "Cleaning and Preservation of Coins and Medallions". It mentions using pickled herring to tarnish coins. So instead of by usual Dell's Darkener these coins are getting three months in the back of the fridge in a jar of pickled herring. These were a good lot to try this with since most of the coins needed electrolysis. I'll post the results of the "Methode Herring" in three months, positive or negative.
And, Oh yes, GREAT COINS!
Update - July 7, 2001
I pulled the coins out of the herring and washed them up. The herring had a profound effect on the coins. They still aren't toned, but they stink to high heaven. So ends the great herring experiment.
eBay #348214069 - antiquity.bureau - 14 @ $2.00 - June 25, 2000
Finished - May 5, 2001 Keeper % = 72% ($2.80 per) Lot value $21.50 ($0.77/ $)
Some nice coins here. Not many, but some. The little Constantine II as Caesar is a very nice little coin.
eBay #349185685 - atgoodman - 10 @ $2.00 - June 26, 2000
Finished - May 6, 2001 Keeper % = 10% ($20 per) Lot value $1.50 ($0.08/ $)
Oh well...

Clean
Finished - May 6, 2001 Keeper % = 58% ($3 per) Lot value $18.25 ($0.87/ $)
Several nice and unusual coins. A silver Valerian and a Gratian ae2 are the standouts.
Yahoo #29925423 - twicealive - 6 @ $2.75 - July 5, 2000
Finished - May 19, 2001 Keeper % = 100% ($2.75 per) Lot value $21 ($1.27/ $)
The standout here is the Maximianus antoninianus. The silvering is a bit patchy which makes the scan look worse than the coin. The rest are pretty average. What isn't average is for all of the coins to be keepers. A nice lot.
Yahoo #30051033 - henrymouse - 15 @ $1.78 - July 6, 2000
Finished - May 20, 2001 Keeper % = 53% ($3.34 per) Lot value $40 ($1.50/ $)
Henry was offering several denarii with his auctions. I was lucky enough to get two. The Vespasian I gave to my aunt, a fan of the Marcus Didius Falco series of historical murder mysteries. I know we all spend our time reading Plutarch and Virgil, but if you know anyone who wants a lighter read they are recommended. Anyway, I figure that this lot was worth 50% more than it cost - generosity like this is perhaps why this vendor no longer offers coins.
eBay #358603893 - doubleo2 - 10 @ $2.50 - July 6, 2000
Finished - May 21, 2001 Keeper % = 60% ($4.16 per) Lot value $19 ($0.76/ $)
These coins are from England and I ordered them looking for something besides the usual Constantines. And I got it. There is a Nice Tetricus and a nicer Victorinus. Very cool.
Yahoo #28952840 - dvb76 (dbantl) - $10 @ 1.75 - July 7, 2000
Finished - June 4, 2001 Keeper % = 70% ($2.50 per) Lot value $7.50 ($0.43/ $)
Not much here at all.
eBay #357024499 - stankov - 20 @ $0.80 - July 8, 2000
Finished - June 11, 2001 Keeper % = 65% ($2.88 per) Lot value $37.50 ($2.34./ $)
This lot wasn't as nice as some of the others I've bought from Stankov. But the Galeria Valeria is a very rare coin to find in an uncleaned lot. The obverse isn't that nice but the reverse is outstanding. The other coin to write home about is the ROme commemorative. Anyway, once again Stankov comes through.
eBay #363991850 - coinmo - 10 @ $1.75 - July 8, 2000
Finished - June 18, 2001 Keeper % = 0% Lot value $0
Nuttin. Zip point poop. Not a sausage. Diddlysquat.
eBay #358295020 - dfledermaus - 12 @ $1.85 - July 10, 2000
Finished - June 20, 2001 Keeper % = 100% ($1.85 per) Lot value $55.75 ($2.51/ $)
What a nice lot! Unusual coins such as the Tetricus II as Prince of Youth and a Constantine Sarmatica Devicta. Just as interesting is the barbaric FEL TEMP copy on the far right. These are the types of lots that makes this whole thing worthwhile.
Yahoo #30234369 - raydar55 - 15 @ $1.19 - July 10, 2000
Finished - June 27, 2001 Keeper % = 27% ($4.46 per) Lot value $3.75 ($0.21/ $)
Only one coin worth writing home about, and that a very common one.
Yahoo #30187214 - mikeycass0242@aol.com - 18 @ $1.05 - July 11, 2000
Finished - July 1, 2001 Keeper % = 0% Lot value $0
These went right into the 'cull' pile. I'll never buy from this guy again.
Amazon #0622W175433 - twicealive - 20 @ $0.66 - July 22, 2000
Finished - July 12, 2001 Keeper % = 15% ($4.40 per) Lot value $9.75 ($0.74/ $)
I thought these would be even worse value than they wound up, but a low grade Carausius showed up! Low grade or not, that is an uncommon coin.
eBay #375988839 - dfledrmaus - 12 @ $1.92 - July 22, 2000
Finished - July 14, 2001 Keeper % = 66% ($2.88 per) Lot value $53 ($2.30./ $)
Look at these. These are the type of coins that make this hobby wonderful;
12 uncleaned ancient coins - $23
Estimated value of coins - $53
Uncovering wonderful, unusual coins - Priceless
Amazon #0701H048651 - molsonfuzz - 10 @ $1.50 - July 22, 2000

Nothing too special.
eBay #352573147 - josephd@efni.com - 15 @ $1.25 - July 23, 2000
Finished - August 1, 2001 Keeper % = 27% ($4.68 per) Lot value $21.50 ($1.15/ $)
No really nice coins here, but since one of them is a Procopius I have nothing whatsoever to complain about.
eBay #356604092 - mc2000uk - 10 @ $2.90 - July 23, 2000
Finished - August 10, 2001 Keeper % = 60% ($3.75 per) Lot value $13.50 ($0.47/ $)
Not much here considering the the price of the coins. Major disappointment.
eBay #375179245 - quadriga7 - 10 @ $1.75 - July 25, 2000
Finished - August 19, 2001 Keeper % = 70% ($2.50 per) Lot value $37.50 ($2.14/ $)
Super coins! I guess it shows my collecting directions that the aEF little Theodosius ae4 and the Maxinianus antoninianus with Hercules on the reverse thrill me more than the aEF FEL TEMP or the neat fouree. I guess it shows even more about the sorry state of my life that I get thrills at all about coins... :) Anyway, nice coins - shame the vendor is history.
eBay #378068613 - shannon67 - 15 @ $1.80 - July 25, 2000
Finished - August 29, 2001 Keeper % = 40% ($4.50 per) Lot value $17.75 ($0.66/ $)
Several unusual coins here, including two I've never received in an uncleaned lot before - a Byzantine tertarteron and a Valentinian II VIRTVS AVGGG. They aren't in great condition, granted, but that's not really the point.
eBay #390452774 - usgyrls - 13 @ $1.35 - August 12, 2000
Finished - August 29, 2001 Keeper % = 23% ($5.85 per) Lot value $10 ($0.57/ $)
Only one nice coin here, a VF Constantine Divo commemoritive.
eBay #383062706 - gifireman - 20 @ $1.60 - August 12, 2000
Finished - September 13, 2001 Keeper % = 65% ($2.46 per) Lot value $34.50 ($1.09/ $)
Whew! It takes a while to clean up a lot when 65% of them are keepers. Not all are that nice, but overall this was a wonderful lot. The nicest is the VF Constantine campgate.
eBay #413153461 - hutto@bigfoot.com - 12 @ $2.25 - Sept 5, 2000
Finished - September 23, 2001 Keeper % = 42% ($5.40 per) Lot value $10.50 ($0.39/ $)
I haven't had a decent lot from Hutto yet. Time to cut my losses - I won't be ordering from them again.
eBay #401366266 - dht56 - 15 @ $1.25 - August 27, 2000
Finished - September 29, 2001 Keeper % = 20% ($6.25 per) Lot value $6.25 ($0.33/ $)
I wasn't expecting much out of these, and I wasn't wrong. The Constans is a nice coin, the rest are bupkus.
eBay #435911540 - caesars12 - 20 @ $2.25 - September 19, 2000
Finished - October 16, 2001 Keeper % = 80% ($2.81 per) Lot value $94.50 ($2.10/ $)
Sorry it took so long to post another cleaned lot but this lot from Joe took a while, and it was worth the wait. Overall, the best coins I've received. 80% keepers, and wonderful keepers at that. I'm one happy scrubber.
eBay #414820487 - dport1 - 12 @ $1.65 - September 19, 2000
Finished - October 31, 2001 Keeper % = 50% ($3.30 per) Lot value $13.20 ($0.66/ $)
Not much here. The Honorius isn't nice but it is rare, and the Constantius II votive is nice but common. Lots of Greek and Provincial which I couldn't ID. Help???
eBay #446771499 - dfledermaus - 12 @ $1.85 - Oct. 25, 2000
Finished - November 13, 2001 Keeper % = 100% (!!!!) ($1.85 per) Lot value $50 ($2.25/ $)
Well, it doesn't get much better than this. There was a nice Julia Maesa fouree denarius in here which I gave to my favorite Aunt for her birthday (hi Linda!!!). Ol' Grandma Maesa was a perfect match for Linda and her mother (hi Nannie!!). Hard-headed, tough, no-nonsense women with a purpose. You can check out my version of their story at Tabloid Numismatics. Anyway, although I've given that coin away I included its value in the total for the lot. Once again, dfledermaus doesn't disappoint. There is a Quintillis and a rare Rome POP ROMANVS here. Very sweet.
eBay #1277249388 - antiquitybureau - 4 @ $7.00 - Oct 11, 2001
Finished - November 22, 2001 Keeper % = 100% ($7.00 per) Lot value $28 ($1.00/$)
It didn't take long to clean these up, and I'm not sure I improved them much. Please let me know what you think.
eBay #434714245 - petroni912@aol.com - 20 @ $1.20 - September 23, 2000
Finished - December 8, 2001 Keeper % = 35% ($3.43 per) Lot value $15.25 ($.64/$)
Not nearly as nice as they previous lot from Petroni, but still not bad. The Augustus as isn't as great coin but it is sure an unusual coin to find in an uncleaned lot
Yahoo #43278807 - tmalo75285@aol.com - 9 @ $2.00 - Nov 18, 2000
Finished - December 31, 2001 Keeper % = 78% ($2.57 per) Lot value $33 ($1.83/$)
No great coins here, but a few very interesting ones. The worn as has three countermarks and the Hadrian is still nice for a fouree (or limes). Fun to clean and attribute.
Jencek's Coins - John Jencek - 5 @ $8.00 - Oct 29, 2001
Finished - January 17, 2002 Keeper % = 100% ($8.00 per) Lot value $43 ($1.08/$)
These were purchased as high-end uncleaned coins. Several needed a lot of work, the Probus 3380 in particular. I really enjoyed cleaning there. Once you have some experience under your belt I suggest doing something like this - find decent coins which need cleaning. They can often be found on eBay as single coins, (not usually in a lot). Very rewarding.

Nice coins but pricey.
eBay #1287724683 - meterman2 - 15 @ $1.35 - Nov 5, 2001
Finished - March 17, 2002 Keeper % = 40% ($3.37 per) Lot value $30.50 ($1.50/$)
These were listed as crusty, and trust me, they were. The rational behind buying encrusted coins (one I agree with) is that they are the only coins we receive that are truly free from cherry-picking. And while the great majority of these didn't come out keepers there was one nice surprise inside a ball of encrustation; a Trajan quadrans! There were two in this lot actually but one was pretty pitted. One coin was too nice to zap (the Julian), the rest were electrocuted.
eBay #512607270 - imabrit@pipeline.com - 12 @ $1.75 - Dec 29, 2000

I think the olive oil would have been better used on a salad.
eBay #1203627391 - bcrumpt1 - 20 @ $0.80 - Jan 12, 2001
Finished - April 6, 2002 Keeper % = 35% ($2.28 per) Lot value $20.50 ($1.28/$)
The little Valentinian II is the nicest example of a tiny ae4 I've found yet. The hair and diadem are still detailed. A nice FEL TEMP too, freed by electrolysis.
eBay #1207111815 - caesars12 - 30 @ $0.75 - Jan 27, 2001
Finished - May 1, 2002 Keeper % = 17% ($4.50 per) Lot value $11.75 ($0.52/$)
I didn't get as many keepers out of this as I expected, but still, this is the first Magentius I've found.
eBay #1214109748 - nemesiscoins - 10 @ $1.89 - Feb 26, 2001
Finished - June 11, 2002 Keeper % = 60% ($3.15 per) Lot value $19 ($1.01/$)
A very nice lot with a nice mix of attributable coins.
Sandy's Coins (Sandy--->)
- Purchased from Bob Bischoff - 25 @ $1.85 - Nov. 25, 2001
Finished - July 10, 2002 Keeper % = 72% ($2.56 per) Lot value $127.50 ($2.76/$)
Well, here are the coins I gave to my daughter to scrub. I finished a few of them off under the scope and of course the two which were zapped were done by me. But all of the other work was done by Sandy? How did I get her to work so hard on these? I appealed to the spirit which made America great - greed. We will be selling these on eBay and Sandy gets whatever profit is made after I get the $46 I invested in the lot. I think Sandy is going to do very well out of these. She says she is going to put the money into her college fund. We'll see. I predict that these coins convert into a new GameBoy game and a couple of BeanieBabies instead. :)
